Terms of Service ​

Welcome to Pocketool (pocketool.app, referred to below as "this site"). By using this site and its tools, you agree to the terms below. These terms apply alongside the Privacy Policy and the Disclaimer.

1. The service and who runs it ​

Pocketool is a collection of free online tools and development notes, maintained and operated by Casper.

These terms cover:

  • This site itself: the home page, development notes and tool guides on www.pocketool.app, plus the tools hosted on this site (the word and character counter, the Chinese number converter and the Simplified and Traditional Chinese converter).
  • Tools under a path (www.pocketool.app/<tool>/): currently Pocket Word King, English Shadowing, Emoji and Kaomoji (Kaomoji Garden), the Office Life Calculator (formerly Calc Lab), QR Code Maker (formerly QR Code Studio), the Taiwan ZIP Code Lookup, Pixel Smith Image Tools, Device Tester and Office Tools.
  • The problem report page (www.pocketool.app/feedback/en/): the page the "Report a problem" link at the bottom of each site opens, for telling the owner about a problem.
  • Tools on a subdomain (*.pocketool.app): currently Spinning Top Arena, Speak Cards English Practice and the Taiwan Life Calculator.

Some tools have their own privacy page or supplementary notice. Those apply alongside these terms, and where they conflict, these terms and this site's Privacy Policy prevail. QR Code Maker, Pixel Smith, the Office Life Calculator, the Taiwan ZIP Code Lookup and Kaomoji Garden each have their own policy page and treat this site's as the parent document. Device Tester and English Shadowing have no policy page of their own and rely on these two documents directly.

2. Accepting these terms, and age ​

  • Using this site or any of its tools means you have read and accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please stop using the site.
  • Most tools need no account. Among the tools hosted under a path, only Kaomoji Garden, English Shadowing, the Pixel Smith Photo Editor and Pocket Word King offer a Google sign in; English Shadowing works in full without signing in, and signing in only syncs your records across devices, and likewise the Pixel Smith Photo Editor only needs a sign in to save editing projects to the cloud; Pocket Word King can be played without one, signing in saves your learning progress and settings, and its mock tests (TOEIC, IELTS and TOEFL question types) always need one. The problem report page needs a Google sign in before a report can be sent. The tools on subdomains, Spinning Top Arena, Speak Cards English Practice and the Taiwan Life Calculator, each have a sign in of their own, and Spinning Top Arena is the only one you must sign in to use. The Privacy Policy, section 1, says what each of them stores. Choosing to sign in confirms again that you accept these terms.
  • This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. This matches the "Children's privacy" section of the Privacy Policy.

3. Licence to use the site ​

As long as you follow these terms, this site grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable right to use the site and its tools. This licence transfers no intellectual property rights; ownership is covered in section 6.

Every tool is currently free. There is no subscription, no paid plan and no in-site purchase, and these terms cover no paid service. If a paid service is offered in future, the terms that apply to it will be published separately.

4. Acceptable use and technical limits ​

  • You agree not to use this site in any way that is unlawful, infringes the rights of others, or interferes with the operation of the service.
  • You must not attempt to break into, reverse engineer, circumvent technical limits, access this site through excessive automation, or otherwise damage this site or other users.
  • To keep the service available, some tools enforce technical limits, and those limits do block requests:
    • Kaomoji Garden: separate rate limits for copy reporting, writes and reads, each over a 60 second window; a Cloudflare Turnstile check before you submit a combo or a comment; and a daily quota on submissions.
    • English Shadowing: three rate limits (30, 60 and 20 requests per minute) and a cap of 20 new videos per IP address per day (people behind the same network share that allowance).
    • Pixel Smith Photo Editor cloud save: up to 3 projects per account, up to 50 MB each, and one upload at a time; signing in, reading, writing and uploading data each have a rate limit (10, 120, 20 and 60 requests per minute).
    • Problem reports: each account can send at most 3 reports and 5 follow-ups a day, with up to 3 screenshots per report; each network also has a daily limit, and signing in, sending and reading each have a rate limit. When the whole site receives too many reports in a day, reporting pauses; please email instead.
  • When you hit one of these limits, the feature is temporarily unavailable. If you breach this section, this site may temporarily or permanently restrict your use of the site or of individual features.

5. Content you submit ​

Among the tools hosted under a path, only the two below accept content from users and display it publicly. "What happens after you submit" describes those two only; "Your warranty and the licence you give" applies to everything you submit anywhere on this site or in any of its tools, problem reports included.

The problem report page also accepts the description, follow-ups and screenshots you send, but they are not public: they go only to the owner, only you and the owner can see them, and the owner uses AI tools to help sort them (see the Privacy Policy). A screenshot may show other people's details, so check it before you send. Content used to harass, advertise or otherwise unrelated to a report may be deleted and the account blocked.

The two tools that display content publicly are:

  • Kaomoji Garden (www.pocketool.app/kaomoji/): Emoji combo submissions, comments, your nickname and the reason you give when you report something.
  • English Shadowing (www.pocketool.app/english-shadowing/): adding a video by pasting a YouTube link.

What happens after you submit ​

  • Submissions and comments are published without prior human review. A combo in Kaomoji Garden is public the moment you submit it: it can be copied, commented on, and gets a public URL of its own. A comment is visible immediately unless it matches a blocked word, in which case it is held for a moderator. Review happens after publication, not before.
  • Your nickname is shown publicly next to every submission and comment. The reason you give in a report is not shown publicly.
  • Any signed-in user can report content. Three upheld reports on the same item hide it automatically, and a moderator can also hide or remove content.
  • Published content may be indexed by search engines.
  • Pasting a YouTube link automatically creates a public page. English Shadowing fetches that video's basic details and English captions, sends them to Cloudflare Workers AI to generate a Chinese summary and outline, stores the result in this site's database, and creates a public video page. Whether a video is kept, and whether search engines may index it, are decided automatically by code, with no human review and no allowlist. You cannot remove that page yourself. To ask for removal, use the contact channels in section 11.
  • Deleting your account does not delete combos you have submitted. Deleting your Kaomoji Garden account deletes your sessions, favourites, comments and reports. Combos you submitted are handled differently: those that have made the site's listings (copied on two different days, or given a theme and English and Chinese titles by this site) stay public, with only the author field and the title and description you wrote at submission cleared; those that have not made the listings are hidden.

Your warranty and the licence you give ​

  • You warrant that you have the right to submit what you submit, that it infringes no third party's copyright, trademark, privacy or other rights, and that it breaks no law.
  • You grant this site a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, reproduce, publicly display and publicly transmit what you submit, to the extent needed to run this site and present that content. You keep the rights in the content itself.
  • What you submit must not be unlawful, infringing, abusive, or unrelated to the purpose of the tool. This site may hide or remove it without prior notice.
  • If you are a rights holder and believe content on this site infringes your rights, tell us through the contact channels in section 11 and we will deal with it as quickly as we can.
  • The tools on subdomains handle content differently: Spinning Top Arena shows your nickname and your Google profile picture to your opponent during a match, and the Taiwan Life Calculator stores the calculations you choose to save, which you can delete yourself once signed in. The Privacy Policy, section 1, has the detail.

6. Intellectual property and third party material ​

The content, code, design and trademarks of this site, excluding data entered or submitted by users, belong to Casper or are used under licence. Please do not reproduce, distribute or use them commercially without permission. If you quote from a development note, please credit the source and include a link to the original.

The tools on this site use the third party material and data below, under each one's own licence. Appearing on this site transfers no rights in them:

  • QR Code Maker: barcode decoding uses zxing-wasm (licensed under Apache License 2.0 and BSD 3-Clause), QR styling uses qr-code-styling, the interface icons come from Lucide (ISC License, with the parts derived from Feather under the MIT License), and the fonts ship with the site through @fontsource. QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED in Japan and in other countries.
  • Office Life Calculator: charts use ECharts.
  • This site's Chinese converter: the conversion code is opencc-js (MIT License) and the dictionary data comes from OpenCC (Open Chinese Convert, Apache License 2.0); the full licence texts are in this file.
  • Taiwan ZIP Code Lookup: the ZIP code and romanised street name data come from Chunghwa Post and the government open data platform (data.gov.tw).
  • This site, Kaomoji Garden, Pixel Smith Image Tools and English Shadowing: fonts are served by Google Fonts.
  • The problem report page: the Latin font Nunito (under the SIL Open Font License 1.1) ships with the site.
  • English Shadowing: it works with third parties' YouTube videos, thumbnails and captions, and the copyright in those belongs to the rights holders. The Chinese summary and outline shown on this site are generated automatically from those captions. When you use the video features you are also bound by the YouTube Terms of Service.

7. Tool results are for reference only ​

Every result on this site is an estimate based on what you enter and on the assumptions built into the tool. Results are for reference only and do not constitute professional advice. A few categories are worth calling out:

  • Financial and employment law estimates: the compound interest, regular investment, FIRE, retirement withdrawal, goal back-calculation, annualised return back-calculation (CAGR and XIRR), mortgage and Qing-An loan calculators, and the labour pension contribution, annual leave, overtime pay and severance pay calculators. These figures are not financial, investment, tax or legal advice. The actual amounts are whatever your financial institution, your employer or the competent authority determines. Consult a qualified professional before making a decision. The overtime pay and severance pay figures in particular are estimates from the assumptions you enter, and should not be used as the basis or as evidence in an employment dispute.
  • Postal and fee estimates: the postage and certified letter fee calculators, and the address romanisation, in the Taiwan ZIP Code Lookup. The underlying data comes from public sources and may lag the latest official announcement. Before you actually post or file something, rely on the announcements of Chunghwa Post and the competent authority.
  • Hardware diagnostics: the mouse, keyboard and sound tests in Device Tester only show the events your browser reports, or play a test tone through your speakers, and the result is affected by your browser, your operating system, your audio hardware and other software. It is not a hardware testing instrument, and it is not a hearing test. A result is not a verdict that a device is faulty or healthy, and it is not advice about repair, purchase or health. Turn your volume down before you start the sound test: playing test tones loudly or for a long time can damage your hearing.
  • Image processing: the ID document watermark in Pixel Smith Image Tools adds a visual mark to an image. It does not guarantee that a copy of your document cannot be misused, that the watermark cannot be removed, or that the image cannot be altered, and it is not a security or anti-counterfeiting guarantee of any kind. Pixelation (mosaic) and blur in the Blur, pixelate or add text tool rewrite the pixels in the covered area, but they do not guarantee that what they cover can no longer be recognised: at low strength, especially with blur, the original outline may still show, so zoom in and check before you share. The feature is not a de-identification guarantee of any kind either. Blur in the Photo Editor is for looks: it does not guarantee that anything becomes unrecognisable and is not meant for hiding personal details, for which you should use Blur, pixelate or add text.

8. Third party services ​

This site and its tools use the third party services below. Each is run by its own company under its own terms and policies, this site is not responsible for their content, and using the related features means you are also bound by their terms:

  • Google AdSense (advertising) and Google Analytics (traffic statistics).
  • Google Fonts (fonts).
  • Google Identity Services (the Google sign in used by Kaomoji Garden, English Shadowing, the Pixel Smith Photo Editor, Pocket Word King and the problem report page).
  • YouTube (the embedded player and video content in English Shadowing, under the YouTube Terms of Service).
  • Cloudflare (hosting and CDN, Turnstile, rate limiting, database, file storage, Workers AI and Web Analytics).
  • The speech recognition and speech synthesis built into your browser (English Shadowing). In some browsers, Chrome among them, that implementation sends the audio, or the text to be spoken, to the browser vendor's own service. That leg does not pass through this site, and the vendor's terms and policies apply to it.

Which tool uses which service, and what each one sends, is set out in the Privacy Policy.

This site also links to external websites. Once you leave this site, those websites are the responsibility of whoever runs them.

9. Changes, suspension and termination ​

  • The service is provided as is. This site may add, change, suspend or discontinue any tool or feature at any time without notice. That includes the Pixel Smith Photo Editor's cloud save, which is not a backup service: an account unused for 180 days is deleted together with its projects, so keep your own copies of photos that matter.
  • Termination by this site: if you breach these terms, this site may suspend or terminate your account and hide or remove what you submitted. Kaomoji Garden already has a suspended account state and moderator tools. After an account is terminated, content already published is handled as described in section 5.
  • Ending it yourself:
    • Kaomoji Garden: once signed in you can delete your account from "My account", though as section 5 explains, the combos you submitted are not deleted with it.
    • English Shadowing: you can only sign out, which just ends syncing on that device. There is no self-service deletion. To delete your account and the records synced to the server, ask through the contact channels in section 11.
    • Pixel Smith Photo Editor: once signed in you can delete a single project, or your account and all cloud projects, under Cloud projects.
    • Taiwan Life Calculator: once signed in you can delete the calculations you saved from your records page.
    • Problem reports: once signed in you can delete a single report, or your account and all your reports, under My reports.
    • Spinning Top Arena and Speak Cards English Practice: there is no self-service deletion. To delete your account and the records on the server, ask through the contact channels in section 11.
    • Every other tool needs no account, so you can simply stop using it.
  • A hash kept after suspension: if an account is suspended for breaching these terms, then even after you delete it, Kaomoji Garden keeps a one-way hash derived from your Google account identifier, to stop the same Google account registering again. No retention period has been set for that record.

10. No warranty and limitation of liability ​

  • This site and its tools are provided "as is" and "as available". There is no warranty that they are free of errors, uninterrupted, always available, correct in their results, or fit for your particular purpose.
  • To the fullest extent permitted by law, this site and Casper are not liable for any direct or indirect loss arising from your use of, or inability to use, this site, or from acting on the results of a tool.
  • This section does not affect liability that may not be excluded or limited in advance by law, such as liability for wilful misconduct or gross negligence, and liability under mandatory consumer protection rules.

11. Disputes and how to reach us ​

If you have questions about these terms, or want to ask us to delete an account, remove content or act on a rights notice, please use the channels listed on the contact page. Requests to delete an account, or to access or correct your data, involve your personal data, so please send them as a private message to the Facebook page or by email rather than posting them in a public comment; what to include is set out in "Account deletion, content removal and rights notices" on the contact page. The current channels are:

If a dispute arises between you and this site, please contact us through the channels above first, so that both sides can try to settle it in good faith.

12. Changes to these terms ​

We may revise these terms from time to time, and the "last updated" date on this page is revised when we do. A significant change will be flagged clearly on this page. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.

These terms, the Privacy Policy and the Disclaimer apply together. Where the three are inconsistent, these terms and the Privacy Policy prevail.
