Touch screen test

Press with several fingers, then drag across every square

Made for a touch screenA mouse or a trackpad can only ever be one point, so multi-touch stays at one. The squares still fill in as you drag with the button held, which is enough to see how the page works before you open it on a touch device.

What the touch screen test shows

See what your touch screen sends to the browser: how many points it registers at once, where each one is, and the size and pressure it reports for each contact. Drag a finger over the whole area and the squares you cross fill in, so a patch that never fills in is a place no touch arrived.

If a square will not fill in

Work down this list before deciding the screen is at fault. The page only sees what the browser hands it, and several ordinary settings keep touches away from a web page.

  1. Try full screen first

Browser toolbars, the address bar and the system gesture areas sit on top of the edges of the screen. In full screen the test area reaches them, and edges that looked dead often fill in straight away.

  2. Check the screen protector and the case

A lifted screen protector, a thick case edge or a drop of water change what the digitiser reads, usually along one edge or in a corner. Wipe the screen dry and press again with a clean fingertip.

  3. Compare with another app

Open a drawing app or the system settings and try the same spot. If the touch works there but not here, it is this browser window, not the screen.

  4. Windows: check the pen and touch settings

On Windows, Settings has Bluetooth & devices then Touch, and Device Manager lists the HID-compliant touch screen. A touch screen disabled there sends nothing to any app, and Windows reports it as a device with no touch points.

  5. Restart the browser, then the device

A browser window that lost its touch input usually comes back after closing and reopening it. If several apps miss touches in the same place, restart the device before looking at the hardware.
