About

Kaomoji Garden is a free library of Japanese kaomoji, Western emoticons, special characters, symbol combos and emoji, in English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Every entry is plain Unicode text: tap it to copy, then paste it into a chat, a bio, a caption or a document.

Kaomoji (顔文字) are Japanese-style text emoticons made from letters and symbols. They are read upright, so there is no need to tilt your head the way you do with :) and the other Western emoticons.

Who makes it

Kaomoji Garden is made by Casper (卡斯伯), a software engineer and instructor in Taiwan and a co-founder of HexSchool. It is part of Pocketool, the collection of free online tools he builds. More about Casper and the other tools: https://www.pocketool.app/en/about

How the collection is sorted

Every kaomoji and emoticon sits in a category by emotion or theme and carries an English and a Chinese name plus tags, so you can browse by mood or search by keyword.

Western sideways emoticons such as :) and Japanese upright kaomoji are kept as two styles. Where a category has both, its page lets you switch between them.

Special characters and symbol combos are grouped by what people use them for, such as dividers, bio bullets, hearts and stars. Emoji names and keywords come from Unicode CLDR, and the emoji themselves are drawn by your device’s font.

Emoji combos are sent in by visitors. They appear without prior review and are moderated afterwards through reports, as the privacy policy explains.

Emoji data: Unicode Emoji 17.0 and Unicode CLDR 48.2, © Unicode, Inc., used under the Unicode License v3. Names and search keywords come from CLDR; the emoji in the lists are drawn by your device's font, and the lists use no vendor images.
